Backing talented players like Rishabh Pant has worked for Delhi Capitals: Ricky Ponting

first_imgWith Delhi Capitals placed comfortably at the second spot in the ongoing IPL, head coach Ricky Ponting on Friday said keeping faith in talented players like Rishabh Pant has helped the team in finding the form at this crucial juncture of the competition.”There have been questions asked about where we should have dropped certain players in some matches, but I believe when you have talented players in your squad, you just keep backing them. We have players who can turn it around quite quickly as it takes just one innings or match to get going in a tournament like this,” the 44-year-old Australian legend said.”… players like Rishabh might have had certain thoughts about World Cup selection, but to be honest, that 78 not out in the first match against Mumbai got us the win. I’m glad he found form again against RR, and what you want from players like him in such a tournament is that they win you three or four matches each throughout the season, and he has won two games for us so far, and if he remains in form, he can get a couple of more wins.”Delhi Capitals now have 14 points from 11 matches, which include seven wins and four losses, and Ponting believes that his team is peaking at the right time.”We have won the last four out of our five matches, and with three more matches to go, I feel we are going in the right direction. I am happy that the team is peaking at the right time, with better communication amongst the group,” he said.advertisementAsked which victory he has enjoyed the most, Ponting said that the away win against Sunrisers Hyderabad by 39 runs was the sweetest in terms of turning it around from a losing situation.”I really liked the Hyderabad win because we did not do much right in that match but still found a way to win. It was more the way we fought back, probably after their batting powerplay, they batted second and they were 60-0, and the game was starting to slip away but there were some really good signs in that game from our side,” said the former Australia captain.”The moments when we have been under pressure the most, that is when we have started to fight, and fight under pressure, and one thing that I have tried to say to the boys is that we do not lose a match until the last ball is bowled. We saw that in our last match against Rajasthan as well. We fought our way back into the match and then registered a win,” he added.Delhi Capitals play against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday. Also Read | Rishabh Pant biggest finisher in T20s right now: Prithvi ShawAlso Read | It felt special when Sourav sir lifted me: Rishabh PantAlso Read | India made the wrong choice by leaving Pant out of World Cup squad: Pontinglast_img read more

Dockworkers’ Strike in Rotterdam Imminent

first_imgzoom Dockworkers strike in the Port of Rotterdam seems to be imminent after the members of the union FNV Havens voted against the offers made by their employers at a meeting held on Friday, 18 December. On Friday, 11 December the employers and port authority left the negotiating table where discussions were being held with the unions on the financial contribution the port of Rotterdam is expected to pay to compensate the social consequences of automation and overcapacity in the container sector. The Port of Rotterdam Authority said that the container terminal companies located on the Maasvlakte and the lashing companies have offered the unions guaranteed employment for the next 4.5 years, which the union said was unacceptable. The union has sent an ultimatum to their counterparts and in case an agreement is not reached after the ultimatum, the unions will call for strikes as of the 1st of January 2016.NV Havens union will resort to strikes as it aims to prevent redundancies that are likely to occur once the two fully-automated container terminals at Maasvlakte become fully operational.According to the union, in the gloomiest scenario up to 700 jobs out of the existing 4,000 could disappear by 2017.Union head Niek Stam is asking for all employees who were on permanent employment contract in January this year to have a guaranteed job until 2024 in addition to extension of the special policies for older workers.Talks on dockworkers’ demands with container operators Europe Container Terminals (ECT), APM Terminals and Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) began in April this year, however a solution has not been reached yet.World Maritime News Stafflast_img read more

Take a tin or leave toilet paper at community cupboard in Winnipeg

first_imgWINNIPEG – A couple who’ve opened a community pantry outside their home in a poor Winnipeg neighbourhood say they could have started a community library, but the neighbours who knock on their door aren’t looking for “War and Peace.”Kelly Hughes and Andrea Vaile live in the Centennial neighbourhood of Winnipeg near several inner-city missions.Their house is attached to a former church which they’re planning to renovate into a theatre and music space, but Hughes says it means they get a lot of people at their door, often asking for food.“We sometimes had some stuff inside handy that we could give them, but Andrea said maybe we should build one of these free pantries,” Hughes explained.“We thought what can we do right here, right in our neighbourhood, right in our street?”Community pantries are a take on the idea of community libraries — where residents build cupboards outside their homes and allow people to take, and leave, items for free.Hughes and Vaile opened their community cupboard on Friday, stocked it with non-perishable food items and toiletries, and posted a message on Facebook asking friends to help them keep it filled. The cupboard is right by their fence. The sign says take what you need, and if you have extra, leave it.There’s juice, fruit cups, canned tuna and veggies, Kraft Dinner, and cat food because Hughes said a lot of people in the area have cats. He said the foods are easy to prepare because many people are in rooming houses and don’t have kitchens. There’s also toilet paper, paper towels and tampons.“One of the reasons that we wanted to do it is Andrea and I have both had our own mental health struggles and we’re fortunate enough to be middle class and have access to different things,” Hughes said.“There are a lot of people that I see that are in the core area who’ve got real challenges like that and have fallen through the cracks.”Hughes said other people in the neighbourhood helped inspire their generosity. Althea Guiboche, a community activist known as the “Bannock Lady” for making and giving away bannock, helps feed people a few blocks away. The cupboard is unlocked all the time. Hughes said if someone has missed dinner at the mission, or the food bank is closed or if someone is drunk or high and couldn’t get into a facility, the cupboard is always open.So far, it has worked out well.“We’ve had a couple of people come and drop stuff off already. Nobody is emptying it out. People are taking one or two things,” Hughes said.last_img read more

Google Arabic content ranks eighth on the internet

first_imgDubai- Arabic is currently ranked the “eighth language in terms of growth and usage on the internet,” a Google spokesperson told Al Arabiya News.Arabic content dropped from the seventh spot 2012, according to the company, adding that it makes up only 3 percent of overall internet content.“There’s a huge gap between the number of people who speak Arabic and the amount of content available online,” Maha Abouelenein, head of communications at Google for the Middle East and North Africa, told Al Arabiya News. There are up to 630 million Arabic-speaking users around the world, she added.Fayeq Oweis, Google’s language services manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said that “Arabic speakers, or people who’d benefit from Arabic content, are 6-7 percent of the world population.”English remains the most used language on the internet, according to the company.Abouelenein urged the creation of Arabic content “because we want the internet to be relevant to those who speak Arabic.”Oweis said that a lot of Arabic content is simply unavailable online.“We have a rich heritage and history, probably not all of it available [online], and even if it is available, it’s either in closed forums or… not searchable,” he said.VideoAbouelenein said that Google-owned YouTube’s partnership program – which the producing company of popular political satirist Bassem Youssef is part of – is intended to support Arabic content producers.“The majority of uploaded content on YouTube in MENA is in Arabic… with YouTube partnership program covering the UAE, KSA, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Morocco,” said the company spokesperson.Top categories for videos produced in the Arabic language “are across general entertainment like comedy music and movies,” according to Google.Source: Al Arabiyalast_img read more

2016 A Difficult Year for Moroccan Women

Rabat – Another year has gone by, and the fight for women’s rights in Morocco is still relentless. 2016 has been quite the eventful year, albeit a gruesome one for Moroccan women. As one sorts through every piece of news and events related to women issues this year, the lack of good accounts is baffling. Cases of rape, murder and violence have piled up, while actions against perpetrators of abuse have been very scarce. The list below describes a few of the year’s events that say a lot about the status of women in Morocco: 1. Mmi Fatiha, Scorched Alive in ProtestFaced by the tyranny of Kenitra’s local authorities, Mmi Fatiha found solace in flames. A humble crepe street vendor, Mmi Fatiha set herself on fire after being humiliated by a Qaed and his aids in the Moroccan city.According to several witnesses, a municipal official threatened the woman, saying he would “run her over with his car” after slapping her, confiscating her commodities and taking all her money. After being forced to the police station and undergoing investigations in poor conditions, Mi Fatiha would be let go to, soon after, immolate herself in an act of protest and desperation.2. Khadija Souidi: A Trial of Flames Martyred by her freed rapists, Khadija became the second Moroccan woman to set herself on fire this year.As she poured gasoline on herself on July 30, Khadija was ending a long-lived nightmare on her own terms. Late 2015, the then 16-year-old girl was kidnapped by 8 men who drove her outside the city of Ben Guerir to rape and torture her.Her assailants were arrested soon after, but immediately freed after a botched trial. As if Khadija hadn’t suffered enough, her rapists tracked her down and threatened her. They told her that if she didn’t drop the case, they would leak her rape tape.Anxious and desperate, and with her struggle being overlooked by authorities, the Moroccan woman set herself on fire on a summer day. The next day, she succumbed to her wounds in a Marrakech hospital.3. 2M’s Makeup TutorialWhat better way to deal with domestic violence than to teach women how to hide the evidence of their abuse? This is what the Moroccan local channel saw as adequate to broadcast on November 23, in anticipation of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women later that week.A perplexing lapse of judgment? A disturbing lack of tact? Or simply the honest reality of a deep discrepancy between a society that aspires to be modern and the obscurantism of a culture that is still deeply rooted in the values of another age? Interpretations can go as wild as interpretations can go.The channel later expressed its apologies, but the fact that the segment was even allowed to air in the first place is concerning.4. Hakkaoui: Respecting Women is a Sign of Virility!Bassima Hakkaoui, Minister of Solidarity, Women and Family, and the government’s spokeswoman for the time being, was the subject of controversy this past November when she said that “violence against women is proof of cowardice [while] respecting women is a sign of virility.”Soon after 2M’s makeup tutorial scandal, Madame the minister came up with the slogan within the context of the national campaign for the elimination of violence against women, which some feminist activists think is emphasizing some very dangerous and outdated stereotypes.Houria Essalmi, chairwoman of the UN Working Group on Enforced Disappearances, expressed her indignation against Hakkaoui’s comments, who claimed that cowardice is not a crime, but violence against women is punished by law.According to many critics, the use of world “virility” in such a grave context reflected a deeply rooted macho culture and highlights the notion that women are a sexual object between the hands of men.5. El Hasnae: Another Martyr of DignityBarely 18, El Hasnae is a young Moroccan woman who refused to be the victim of sexual harassment inside her own home and by her own adoptive father.Outraged by what was happening to her, she left her house and spent several nights alone in a Rabat train station. The young Moroccan woman later got help from the Free Feminist Union (UFL), who helped her find refuge in a women’s shelter. One month later, however, the union that earlier helped El Hasnae found out that she, along with 15 other girls at the shelter, had been the victims of a collective rape from a group of men in Rabat. El Hasnae decided to return home, only to be found a few weeks later at the bottom of a well, dead.Murder, accident or suicide? We still don’t know.6. The 103.13 Bill: One Step Forward, Two Steps BackOn July 18, the Moroccan parliament voted for the second draft of the 103.13 bill on violence against women. While the draft has some new interesting additions such as the incrimination of sexual harassment, it is still far from delivering justice to Moroccan women. Vague and incomplete, the new draft was heavily criticized by many feminist associations, which accused it of legitimizing marital rape, only acknowledging physical violence against married women, and dismissing their social and economic rights, amongst other atrocities. As a reminder, the 103.13 bill, which was approved by the House of Representatives last July, was sent to the House of Councilors in August. No date has yet been set to discuss the bill.2016: A Difficult Year for Women’s RightsUnfortunately, this short list only represents a small percentage of the injustices perpetrated against women in Morocco. While the unadulterated violence portrayed this year does in fact depict the reality of women’s situation in Morocco, the other side of the coin shines as well. There is a silver lining. Amidst the abuse, the indifference and the oppression, are the voices of those who can no longer stand such darkness. The emergence of new young voices calling out the blunt oppression and the guilty silence of the authorities and society. Whether they were militants, activists, journalists or ordinary citizens, many were effective in calling out the injustice. Members of associations, movements or collectives — they all stepped out when needed in an effort to support the cause of Moroccan women.Respect and gratitude to those who refused to bow down in the face of violence and ignorance, and a lot of love to those who still suffer in the shadows, hidden from the rest of the world.Edited by Ghita Benslimane read more

Nepal UNESCO chief condemns murder of journalist as attack on all society

The head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today condemned the murder of a Nepalese journalist by Maoist rebels as an affront to democracy and an attack on the whole of society. Maoist rebels abducted Dakendra Raj Thapa, a reporter for state-owned Radio Nepal, on 26 June and killed him earlier this month, accusing him of spying. Mr Thapa was also an advisor to the Dailekh district committee of the Human Rights and Peace Society’s (HURPES), a Kathmandu-based human rights organization. “I am gravely concerned by the conditions faced by journalists in Nepal and call on all the parties concerned to respect the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which enshrines press freedom and freedom of expression as a fundamental human right,” UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura said. “There can be no justification for the use of violence to muzzle journalists and prevent them from carrying out their professional duty,” he added. “A free press is essential for democracy which is why attacking journalists is tantamount to attacking all members of a society.” The Committee to Protect Journalists, a United States-based non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to promoting press freedom, has counted 14 other reports of beating, harassment, imprisonment and abduction of journalists in Nepal this year alone. read more

Cyprus final member of missing persons committee installed at UN ceremony

Christophe Girod, the senior International Red Cross official in Washington, joins two Cypriot members on the Committee entrusted with the exhumation, identification and return of remains of missing persons from a dispute that spans more than four decades. Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Michael Møller, oversaw the ceremony, which was attended by Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. The Committee’s members welcomed the presence of the two leaders as a tangible message of support for their work. Mr. Møller said he hoped Mr. Girod’s arrival would help accelerate the closing of a painful chapter in the history of Cyprus. The two Cypriot members said Mr. Girod’s arrival and the strengthening of the Committee would contribute to carrying out its humanitarian work for the benefit of the families of missing persons. The UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Ibrahim Gambari, already in the region to assess the political situation, had “a frank and constructive exchange” with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul today. He is set to meet with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis on Wednesday moving on to Cyprus on Thursday.Official contacts between the two parties on the island have not resumed since the April 2004 referendum on a comprehensive settlement plan, sponsored by Mr Annan, failed. About 65 per cent of Turkish Cypriots voted in favour, while 76 per cent of Greek Cypriots voted against it.The UN has been involved in the island since March 1964 when the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was established with a mandate to prevent a recurrence of fighting, contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and order, and contribute to a return to normal conditions. Currently the fourth-oldest UN peacekeeping operation in the world, it seeks to maintain stability in the 180-kilometre-long Buffer Zone and ensure that there is no alteration of the status quo along the two ceasefire lines drawn in 1974 after renewed fighting. read more

Its primetime at Amazoncom … shares hit 1000

Its stock surpassed the $1,000 mark for the first time. That price put Amazon’s market value at about $478 billion, double that of the world’s biggest traditional retailer, Wal-Mart, and more than 15 times the size of Target. A $1,000 investment on Amazon’s first day of trading in 1997 would be worth more than $500,000 today. Not only has Amazon changed the retail landscape since it became a public company 20 years ago, it’s now part of a small cadre of high-flying stocks belonging to companies that have defied Wall Street and shunned stock splits. Those splits make the stock more affordable and generate brokerage fees. But companies like Amazon have chosen to reward its long-term investors. The last time Amazon has split its stock was nearly 18 years ago, according to financial research firm FactSet.Another company with a similar philosophy is Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google.Amazon just beat Alphabet to the $1,000 level, with its Class A shares just $2 short of $1,000 Tuesday.Only four other U.S.-listed companies have shares trading above $1,000: online travel booking company Priceline Group Inc., homebuilder NVR Inc., pork producer and ocean transportation company Seaboard Corp. and the apostle of long-term investing, Warren Buffett, with his holding company Berkshire Hathaway Inc. But stock prices only tell a part of the story. The value of a company is determined by its stock price and the number of shares on the market. is well over four times the size of Priceline, NVR and Seaboard combined. It’s 17 per cent bigger than Berkshire Hathaway, a multinational conglomerate with ownership stakes in some of America’s most well-known consumer brands like Coca-Cola, insurance companies and U.S. infrastructure.Since launching a website to sell mostly books in 1995, Amazon has transfigured retail, sent revenue numbers to stratospheric heights, and is among the biggest reasons longtime powerhouses like Macy’s, Borders bookstores and even RadioShack have suffered. Those companies are closing locations and Amazon is filling the void, sometimes literally.Last week in a location once occupied by Borders, the bookstore chain that went out of business in 2011, Amazon opened its first bookstore in New York City._____Contact Joseph Pisani at In this Thursday, May 25, 2017, photo, gift cards are on display at the Amazon Books store in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, in New York. Paul Heyman on his and Brock Lesnars WWE future Mike and Maria

first_img Braun Strowman Still Not Cleared For Match Paul Heyman on his and Brock Lesnar’s WWE futureThe New York Post is featuring an interview with Paul Heyman where he address his contractual future with WWE, along with WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, following WrestleMania 34 this Sunday night in New Orleans.Heyman admits Sunday could be the last time he walks to a WWE ring as the advocate for Brock Lesnar in the company going forward.“The reasons are rather public. Brock is eyeballing a return to the octagon. He’s made no secret about it. He’s out in Las Vegas at the UFC offices taking a selfie with Dana White wearing a UFC T-shirt. These are not secret negotiations. The fact that both our contracts are coming due is not a secret, either. Is this the last time that Brock Lesnar goes out to the ring in WWE, I truly don’t know that answer because what we’re focused on at the moment is … Brock is very laser focused on the task at hand. Once we’re done with that task then we’ll focus on what happens after April 8th. It’s just the mindset that Brock Lesnar has and it’s worked for him every since he won an NCAA Division I heavyweight championship.”Heyman also thinks now is a good time for Lesnar to negotiate a return to the UFC with Ronda Rousey transitioning to WWE and Conor McGregor’s MMA future in doubt.“The three biggest box office attractions in UFC history are Brock Lesnar, Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor. Ronda Rousey is now full time with WWE. Conor McGregor is a cottage industry all of his own, which frees up Brock Lesnar to come in and take over as the preeminent box office attraction in UFC. The UFC needs someone they can bank on and not spend a year negotiating with just getting them into the cage, which is the case with Conor McGregor. If Ronda Rousey ever goes back, it won’t be within the next year, so I think it’s a perfect time for Brock Lesnar because UFC is in desperate need of a top box office attraction and his box office receipts speak for themselves.”Mike and Maria welcome new babyWWE stars Mike and Maria Kanellis revealed the birth of their new daughter today. 2018.05.08 Tenacious D Adam Martin RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR WhatsApp Wrestleview Live #63: Reviewing and discussing SummerSlam 2019 from Toronto Brock Lesnar WrestleMania 36 Will Be In Tampa Video: Seth Rollins says his victory over Brock Lesnar might be the greatest victory of his career Brock Lesnar Will Wrestle At SummerSlam Videos Articles Pinterest Facebook Videos Articles WWE RAW Results – 8/12/19 (Night after SummerSlam, Seth Rollins, The Miz vs. Ziggler) Now Playing Up Next Now Playing Up Next Will Bobby Lashley Finally Face Brock Lesnar? SNAP recipients in state to get benefits early because of shutdown

first_imgLONGVIEW — The state Department of Social and Health Services announced Tuesday that clients will receive their February food stamp benefits weeks earlier than usual because of the partial federal government shutdown. The department is acting on instructions from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to give out Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits by Jan. 20 to limit the potential effects of any lapse in funding.SNAP recipients usually get their monthly food stamp benefits anywhere from the first of the month to the 20th, according to the state department.Early distribution of food stamps has caused some concern in the social service community that beneficiaries may not budget wisely and use up their assistance too soon, and could go hungry before receiving their next round of assistance.About 21.6 percent of Cowlitz County households, roughly 22,000 people, receive SNAP benefits, according to the Food Research and Action Center.John Gotshall, with St. Vincent de Paul food bank in Longview, said the organization hasn’t seen a noticeable jump in clients but added that he does anticipate that number to rise if the shutdown continues.last_img read more

Man who shared New Zealand mosque shooting video gets 21month sentence

Sanka Vidanagama / AFP/Getty Images A man who shared a video of the deadly New Zealand mosque shooting received a 21-month prison sentence on Tuesday. Philip Arps pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing the video of the March 15 attacks, which were livestreamed by the shooter as he killed 51 people.Judge Stephen O’Driscoll noted that Arps, who runs a business in Christchurch, sent the video to 30 people, according to Associated Press. He also asked someone to add crosshairs and a kill count in an effort to create a meme, but there was no evidence he shared that.Arps apparently showed no empathy for the victims as he was questioned about the video. He was among six people charged with illegally redistributing it.
