Around 2,000 more migrants reached the Turkish border with Greece on Sunday after Turkey opened its gates to Europe saying it could no longer cope with refugees from war-torn Syria.Since dozens of Turkish troops were killed in northwest Syria last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has launched reprisal attacks against Syrian regime forces and increased pressure on Europe over the conflict.Around 2,000 people including women and children arrived on Sunday morning from Istanbul and walked through a field towards the Pazarkule border gate, an AFP correspondent said. The group included Afghans, Syrians and Iraqis. Thousands who were already at the border had spent the night in very cold temperatures and lit fires to warm themselves up, the correspondent added.A small group of migrants threw stones at a Greek police car on the other side of the border where skirmishes occurred the day before as the Greeks refused to let them cross.Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu claimed on Twitter that 76,358 migrants had left Turkey by Sunday morning via Edirne province where Pazarkule is located.Edirne, which is in northwest Turkey, borders Greece and Bulgaria. AFP was unable to immediately verify Soylu’s claim. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) late Saturday said around 13,000 migrants gathered along the Turkish-Greek border.Turkey hosts around 3.6 million Syrian refugees and in recent years, the number of Afghans entering Turkey has jumped.More than 200,000 Afghans were caught in Turkey in 2019, double from more than 100,000 in 2018, according to official figures.Erdogan on Saturday said Turkey had “opened the doors” and did not plan to close them because “the European Union should keep its promises”.He was referring to the 2016 deal with Brussels to stop the flow of refugees in exchange for billions of euros.European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday said the EU was watching “with concern” and stood ready to deploy its Frontex border guard agency to respond.Ankara seeks to pressure Western governments into supporting Turkey in Syria after 34 Turkish troops were killed since Thursday in northern Syria’s Idlib region.Turkish forces retaliated and continued to hit Syrian regime positions this weekend after Erdogan warned Damascus would “pay a price” for its aggression.Topics :

The 22-year-old has started all four of Swansea’s Barclays Premier League matches to date but his injury will now allow Fernandez to establish a central defensive partnership with captain Ashley Williams. Fernandez, who played four times for Argentina at the 2014 World Cup, has only made one start for Swansea since his £8million move from Napoli last month, the Capital One Cup home victory over Rotherham. Press Association Swansea defender Jordi Amat has been ruled out for six weeks after suffering knee ligament damage. The Spaniard sustained the injury during the 4-2 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Saturday and was replaced at half-time by Argentina centre-back Federico Fernandez. Amat underwent a scan on Sunday and saw a consultant the following day, with the results confirming a strained lateral ligament and ruling him out until the end of October.
By Clare Lovell(REUTERS) – Departing captain John Terry led his Chelsea champions to a rip-roaring 4-3 victory over Watford on Monday, scoring the first goal on an evening of celebration, fireworks and streamers rather than vintage football at Stamford Bridge.Terry, who is leaving this season after 22 years with the club, hooked home a loose ball from a Willian corner in the 22nd minute. The defender has scored in 17 consecutive Premier League seasons. But the former England captain was at fault for the equaliser when barely two minutes later he back-headed a ball he should have cleared, sending it straight to Etienne Capoue for an easy headed goal.Chelsea had won the title with a 1-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion on Friday, so Monday’s game was more about enjoying the moment with the fans and giving those who had not figured too often in the season a chance to shine.Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, hailed by the crowd with chants of “Antonio, Antonio”, made nine changes from the West Brom game, mindful also of the FA Cup final less than two weeks away. Although the makeshift side looked frail at the back, they commanded the midfield and were always dangerous going forward.Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta put Chelsea ahead again in the 36th minute and striker Michy Batshuayi, Diego Costa’s understudy, followed his goal on Friday with Chelsea’s third on Monday, four minutes into the second half.Watford put a brief damper on fans’ celebrations with Daryl Janmaat dribbling through for Watford’s second goal and substitute Stefano Okaka equalising in the 74th.But when substitute Cesc Fabregas put away the winner in the 88th minute, the stadium erupted once again in song for Conte, for Terry and for a title that had looked out of reach after a 10th-place finish last season and a shaky start last autumn.Watford’s Sebastian Prodl was sent off in injury time after a reckless challenge on Pedro brought a second yellow card from referee Lee Mason. But that was only one low point in an entertaining and committed performance from 16th-placed Watford, who never gave up despite having little to play for with just one game at home to Manchester City to go next weekend.“At this stage of the season I like to see this type of game,” Conte said. “It’s fun to see teams score three and four goals … but only at this stage of the season.”Fireworks lit up the sky in south-west London as Mason blew the final whistle while blue-and-white streamers rained on the pitch. The players and their hugely popular Italian coach ran a lap of honour, the be-suited Conte jumping and dancing with his charges to celebrate a first English title in his first season in charge.Chelsea could reach 93 points with victory at home to relegated Sunderland next weekend and Conte’s side have the chance to win the double when they meet Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 27.“The FA Cup final you start to play 10 days before … I have a plan in my head to play the final,” Conte said.“At the moment I have 13 or 14 players who deserve to play the FA Cup final who are in very good form. I have 13 days to make my decision.”

“I can’t give him 50 snaps come Sunday,” Lynn said. “I think that’s way too many.”We have a package for him — a role for him in this game. He may even start this game. But we’re going to see how he looks at the end of the week and go from there.” Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott looks to rebound vs. Packers Melvin Gordon is ready to make his 2019 debut.Speaking Thursday on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn confirmed the star running back will play a role in Los Angeles’ game plan Sunday against the Broncos but said the team doesn’t want to push him too soon. Patriots to sign Mike Nugent after Stephen Gostkowski injury, reports say “He’s getting more work [in practice] this week, and he’s definitely going to have a workload this week, but not too big,” Lynn said. “I want to work him in, but I don’t want to overdo it.”Lynn couldn’t confirm how heavy Gordon’s workload would be, adding that it would depend on his performance at practice this week, but left the door open for the 2015 first-round pick to possibly resume his starting role. 7. And that’s not all… While those post players are enough to handle, the Bobcats supports a couple of deft guards. Jack Dale is a left-handed strong guard, who can hit 40 percent from beyond the arch. If that’s not enough, Jahron McPherson is the point guard, who probably leads the team in rebounds. Yes, that’s right – a point guard who leads in rebounding.“He goes about 100 miles a minute,†Buchanan said. “He is a real crowd pleaser as well. When he makes a basket he shoots his guns like he is Russell Westbrook.†5. So when did the Bobcats last lose?…Well, funny you asked. Basehor-Linwood, last season, came into the state tournament as the No. 3 seed at 19-3 and battled El Dorado, which was 13-9 going into the first round game. The Wildcats upset the Bobcats, 50-48.“They have been using that game as motivation all year,†said Brian Buchanan, Wellington head boys basketball coach. “I’ve been reading in the paper how that game stung and they want to get back to prove to everyone it was a fluke.â€The Bobcats finished No. 2 in Class 4A-Division 1 KBCA rankings just below McPherson.Basehor-Linwood won the state championship in Class 4A in 2009 and 2012.Wellington was probably going to play McPherson in the first round, but Chanute, 11-11, upset undefeated Independence in the sub-state first round. 10. The hype and the glory… Wellington graced the front page of the Wichita Eagle sports section, i.e. Bird Paper, Tuesday with a spread stating “Wellington ends wait.†It’s a nice piece by Jeffrey Lutz (see story here). “It’s been a fun week,†Buchanan said. “I’ve fielded about 500 questions from parents and grandparents. Everyone is so excited. It’s a good problem to have.â€Follow us on Twitter. 8. So what does Wellington need to do to beat the Bobcats?…Perhaps, flattening the school bus tires before they get to Salina might help.“We can’t run with them,†Buchanan said. “If we run with them, then they will embarrass us. It’s going to take good fundamental basketball.†by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Ten things you need to know about the Wellington boys’ first state tournament basketball game in 58 years…1. Who, what, when, where…Wellington (12-10) will be the seventh seed battling No. 1 seed Basehor Linwood (22-0) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. Sumner Newscow will be having a live feed. KLEY-AM, simulcast with Channel 5 and TuneIn Radio, will be broadcasting the game with Andrian Young. There will be a send-off pep rally for the boys at 9:30 a.m. at the Wellington High School in the back parking lot near the locker room area. The band, cheerleaders, students and any fans who wish to show up will be in attendence. All schools will then be let out at 11:45 a.m. so people can attend. There will be a school fan bus going up for any student needing a ride. It will be $5 to get on. Students will need $7 admission fee into the game and concession food money. The bus is leaving at 12:30 p.m.2. So how do you get there?…The trip will take two hours. Just take the turnpike, get off the exit 42 and take I-135 north and never get off (unless you have to go) until you reach Salina. Then turn right at the Crawford St. exit head east until you hit S. Front Street. It’s a little tricky looping around when you turn north, but by that time, you should be amongst plenty of cars.3. The truth about Basehor-Linwood…Well to say they are pretty good, may be understating it a bit. They got to the state tournament after beating Kansas City Piper 71-46 in the sub-state championships in Tonganoxie. Their mascot is green and gold and they are called the Bobcats. They have had four close games this season and that same Piper team they beat Saturday by 25, was their closest opponent this year, losing by three points on their home gymnasium during the regular season. Kansas City Turner was within six points, 76-70 (see Basehor-Linwood schedule here).  4. So where is this school?…The high school is located in Basehor which is in the Kansas City area, just north of I-70, south of Lansing, north of Bonner Springs, east of Tonganoxie and northeast of Lawrence. It plays in the Kaw Valley Conference against the likes of Piper, Mill Valley, Lansing and others. No team came four games of them this year. This season Basehor-Linwood scored 931 points and held opponents to 659. 6. The team’s makeup…The Bobcats are kind of like, well… everything. They have the speed of Wichita Collegiate, the height of Andale, and the offensive tenacity of Circle.“Whatever you have heard about them, they are even better than that,†Buchanan said. They have two towering figures in the post area. Patrick Muldoon, a power forward, who is averaging about 18.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game and is eerily similar to Trevor Nance, who is averaging 18.7.“They will be matched up with one another, so that should be fun to watch,†Buchanan said. And then there is Carson Filger, the team’s 6-2 senior center, who is averaging 9.6 ppg. 9. But then there is hope… Wellington is 12-10, but there are a few things that give Crusader fans reason to believe this won’t be the blowout some may fear.First of all, Wellington has had a fantastic second half of the season. After establishing itself with a big win against Winfield with Will Adler in the lineup, it came close to toppling Andale, losing by three to Collegiate, and beating everyone else it was supposed to beat including a 63-30 win over Mulvane and 77-61 victory over Rose Hill at the sub-state in Winfield. The Dukes are scoring points and playing with confidence. In the two post season games, Wellington had four players in double figures both night. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password! It’s Turkey Day and that means one thing: Football. The NFL’s annual holiday tradition continues as three games are on the slate for Thanksgiving Day this year. As always, the Lions and Cowboys will play on the fourth Thursday in November as they host the Bears and Bills respectively. Then the Falcons host the Saints in the nightcap to finish off the day. MORE: Watch NFL Thanksgiving games live with fuboTV (7-day free trial)Detroit began playing games on Thanksgiving in 1934, and Dallas began in 1966. In 2006, the league added a third primetime game that features different teams every year giving fans and players a chance to experience the NFL’s Turkey-Day tradition. The headliner of the day should be Bills-Cowboys as it’s the only game to feature two teams with winning records. Buffalo (8-3) has quietly flown under the radar this season and is poised to make the playoffs for the second time in three seasons as it’ll try and pick up a marquee win against Dallas (6-5). Meanwhile, the Bears (5-6) look to get back to .500 when they face the Lions (3-7-1). New Orleans (9-2) travels to Atlanta (3-8) as it tries to clinch a playoff berth and its third straight season with 10 or more wins.NFL THANKSGIVING PICKS: Straight up | Against the spreadThanksgiving football schedule 2019Here’s the full NFL schedule for Thanksgiving 2019, plus final scores and how to watch every game live. You can keep up with live scores and stats with SN’s live scoreboard.GameTimeTVBears (5-6) at Lions (3-7-1)12:30 p.m. ETFox, fuboTVBills (8-3) at Cowboys (6-5)4:30 p.m. ETCBS, fuboTVSaints (9-2) at Falcons (3-8)8:20 p.m. ETNBC, fuboTVHow to watch, live-stream NFL Thanksgiving gamesHere’s how to catch every game on Thanksgiving Day.Bears vs. LionsKickoff: 12:30 p.m. ETTV (national): FoxTV (Detroit): WJBKTV (Chicago): WFLDLive stream: fuboTV (7-day free trial)For the 86th straight year, the Lions will play on Thanksgiving day. While Detroit got off to a solid 2-0-1 start, the team’s gone off the rails in recent months losing seven of its last eight games. Not to mention quarterback Matthew Stafford hasn’t played since Week 9 due to an injured back and hip and isn’t expected back anytime soon.On the other side, the Bears look to be hitting their stride. After dropping four straight earlier this season, Chicago’s won two of its last three and looks to make it three of its last four on Thanksgiving.Detroit’s all-time record on Thanksgiving is 37-40-2.Bills vs. CowboysKickoff: 4:30 p.m. ETTV (national): CBSTV (Dallas): KTVTTV (Buffalo): WIVB-TVLive stream: fuboTV (7-day free trial)Dallas makes its 52nd appearance on Thanksgiving day as it plays host to the upstart Bills.Following a 3-0 start, many pegged the Cowboys as Super Bowl contenders. But a 3-5 record since has many doubting America’s Team, and in particular, coach Jason Garrett. Despite its subpar play, Dallas is still in the driver’s seat in the NFC East and with a favorable schedule the rest of the way. However, the Cowboys need to deal with an under-the-radar Bills team.Buffalo’s yet to beat anyone of note, but that shouldn’t devalue what it’s done this season. Quarterback Josh Allen’s playing the best football of his career right now as he’s thrown 10 touchdowns and just one interception in his last six games. A win on Thursday would help validate Buffalo in the eyes of both experts and fans alike, but things don’t get any easier as the Bills still have to face Baltimore and New England over the waning weeks of the season. The Cowboys are 31-19-1 all time on Thanksgiving.Saints vs. FalconsKickoff: 8:20 p.m. ETTV (national): NBCTV (Atlanta): WXIA-TVTV (New Orleans): WSDULive stream: fuboTV (7-day free trial)For the second straight year, the Falcons and Saints meet on Thanksgiving night. Last season, the two teams met in New Orleans where the Saints sent the Falcons packing after a 31-17 victory. Atlanta not only seeks revenge this season, but looks to sweep the season series with New Orleans and hurt the Saints’ chances at a top seed in the NFC playoff picture as well. The two teams met earlier this season on Nov. 10 where the Falcons trounced the saints 26-9 in Drew Brees’ first game since he injured his thumb in Week 2. Despite their paltry record, the Falcons have played better in recent weeks winning two of their last three. However, a lot more is at stake for New Orleans as it can clinch the NFC South for the third straight season with a win Thursday.NFL scores Thanksgiving 2019Final scoresBears at LionsBills at CowboysSaints at Falcons
